Govt denies encouraging organ harvesting after death of 10 people in Kerala

An inquiry has been started into the death of two men in Tamil Nadu who were apparently organ harvested after a 10-day coma, the State Health Minister said.

Ramesh Roshan Singh, senior doctor at the M.T. Roshan Institute of Medical Science in Lucknow, informed that one man succumbed to respiratory failure and the other passed away due to complications of organ transplantation. In a related development, authorities in Karnataka in connection with a similar case have registered a case.

The two deceased are said to have been in critical condition on Sunday evening at Sankalp Hospital, Tamil Nadu. One of the two, identified as a 31-year-old Tamil, was rushed to M.T. Roshan Hospital after suffering a severe respiratory failure and later died on Sunday evening after a prolonged coma. The other, a 45-year-old Indian, also underwent respiratory failure on Sunday evening and was later declared dead after death and decomposition of his body was confirmed.

On April 8, the day of the organ harvesting in Kerala, two other men were flown to Hyderabad from Tamil Nadu by private aircraft. They succumbed to respiratory complications later on Saturday and are undergoing further hospitalisation. Earlier this month, the same officials had registered the death of a 20-year-old man who underwent cardiac surgery in Chennai and succumbed to respiratory failure on Sunday evening. He had succumbed to respiratory complications due to brain bleed from a head wound.
